Named after Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene—second-in-command to General George Washington—the county of Greene was founded in 1838 from a portion of Orange County. In 1840, the famed Lafayette Inn and Restaurant was built and has housed a lawyer's office, buggy & harness shop, and bar. The town of Stanardsville is a State and National Historic District, once a stagecoach stop on the way to the Shenandoah Valley and beyond. It is the home of the Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive, and is a rising center for commercial and light industrial development.
